Let this Darkness be a bell tower
Collaboration with Illustrator Matt Huynh
The On Being Project reached out to me to work with Illustrator Matt Huynh and animate a poem for their “Poetry Films” series. The poem given to us was “Let this Darkness be a Bell Tower” by Rainer Maria Rilke. Our animation features a reading and translation by Joanna Macy, with sound by Chris Heagle.
Working with an illustrator who’s medium is SO different to mine posed many challenges. I figured the best way to meld our styles was to stick to black-and-white with harsh shadows. Matt made various textures and washes and patterns to inspire the landscape and eventually they brought everything together as overlays. The hand-drawn animations were layered on and the frame rate of the 3D was dropped to match. Overall, I am extremely happy with the outcome.
